A DESTINATION WEDDING IN LAS CATALINAS, COSTA RICA

There are weddings that stay with you long after the day ends, and then there are weddings that become part of your own story forever. Sam and Miguel’s intimate destination wedding in Costa Rica was both! Set in the stunning beachfront town of Las Catalinas, Costa Rica, this celebration was filled with warmth, color, emotion, and meaning on every level. Not only was this wedding the kickoff to our 2026 wedding season, but it also marked a deeply personal milestone for me as a wedding photographer, because the bride is my younger sister!

Miguel’s native country of Costa Rica was the perfect place for Miguel and Sam to begin their marriage. Nestled along the west coast in the Guanacaste Province, Las Catalinas feels like something straight out of a dream. The town is known for its European-inspired architecture, winding walkways, and vibrant, colorful buildings that catch the sunlight beautifully at every turn. The laid-back coastal energy, paired with the thoughtful design of the town, created an atmosphere that felt romantic, relaxed, and incredibly intentional! It was the ideal setting for an intimate destination wedding focused on connection, family, and presence.

Sam and Miguel began their day at Santarena Hotel, a beautiful and serene space tucked right into the heart of Las Catalinas. The morning was calm and full of anticipation; those quiet moments before everything unfolds that always feel so exciting. One of the most emotional moments of the day was their first look: as Miguel turned around and saw his bride for the first time that day, his eyes filled with the happiest tears. Watching my sister step into this next chapter with Miguel was overwhelming in the very best way!

Afterward, Arturo and I did what we love most: exploring! We walked through Las Catalinas with the bride and groom, stopping at every charming nook, archway, staircase, and colorful wall we could find. The town offered endless portrait opportunities, each one more beautiful than the last.

As the sun began to dip toward the horizon, Miguel and Sam gathered with their closest family members for an intimate wedding ceremony filled with love and meaning. There was something incredibly powerful about how simple and heartfelt it all was; no distractions, just the people who matter most witnessing the start of their marriage. The warm Costa Rican air, the golden sunset light, and the emotional weight of the moment made their ceremony unforgettable!

Following the ceremony, the celebration continued with a delicious dinner at Santarena Hotel. The evening felt like a true reflection of Miguel and Sam: intentional, relaxed, and full of joy. Family gathered around the table, stories were shared, and laughter echoed well into the night. To end the evening on the perfect note, the new Mr. & Mrs. cut into a tropical piña colada wedding cake, a playful and fitting dessert that perfectly matched the spirit of their day.

While Arturo and I are honored to be part of all of our couples’ wedding days, this one held a special place in my heart. Not only was I photographing my little sister’s wedding, but this celebration also marked the 10th year that Arturo has been photographing weddings with me. Ten years of partnership, storytelling, and shared passion, and what a way to begin that chapter!

Miguel and his family are truly wonderful, kind, and welcoming people. Seeing the love that Sam and Miguel share for one another made it even clearer that my sister has found her perfect match. I can’t imagine a better person to have captured her heart!

Hay bodas que se quedan contigo mucho después de que el día termina, y luego están las bodas que pasan a formar parte de tu propia historia para siempre. ¡La boda íntima de destino de Sam y Miguel en Costa Rica fue ambas cosas! Celebrada en el impresionante pueblo costero de Las Catalinas, esta celebración estuvo llena de calidez, color, emoción y significado en todos los sentidos. No solo fue esta boda el inicio de nuestra temporada de bodas 2026, sino que también marcó un hito profundamente personal para mí como fotógrafa de bodas, ¡porque la novia es mi hermana menor!

Costa Rica, el país natal de Miguel, fue el lugar perfecto para que Miguel y Sam comenzaran su matrimonio. Ubicado en la costa oeste, en la provincia de Guanacaste, Las Catalinas parece sacado de un sueño. El pueblo es conocido por su arquitectura de inspiración europea, sus senderos sinuosos y sus edificios vibrantes y coloridos que capturan la luz del sol de una manera espectacular en cada rincón. La energía relajada de la costa, combinada con el diseño cuidadosamente pensado del pueblo, creó una atmósfera romántica, tranquila e increíblemente intencional. Fue el escenario ideal para una boda íntima de destino enfocada en la conexión, la familia y el estar presentes.

Sam y Miguel comenzaron su día en el Hotel Santarena, un espacio hermoso y sereno ubicado en el corazón de Las Catalinas. La mañana fue tranquila y llena de expectativa; esos momentos silenciosos antes de que todo comience que siempre se sienten tan emocionantes. Uno de los momentos más emotivos del día fue su first look: cuando Miguel se dio la vuelta y vio a su novia por primera vez ese día, sus ojos se llenaron de las lágrimas más felices. Ver a mi hermana dar este paso tan importante junto a Miguel fue abrumador, en el mejor de los sentidos.

Después, Arturo y yo hicimos lo que más nos gusta: ¡explorar! Caminamos por Las Catalinas junto a los recién casados, deteniéndonos en cada rincón encantador, arco, escalera y pared colorida que encontrábamos. El pueblo nos regaló infinitas oportunidades para retratos, cada una más hermosa que la anterior.

Cuando el sol comenzó a esconderse en el horizonte, Miguel y Sam se reunieron con sus familiares más cercanos para una ceremonia íntima, llena de amor y significado. Había algo increíblemente poderoso en lo simple y sincero de ese momento; sin distracciones, solo las personas más importantes siendo testigos del inicio de su matrimonio. El aire cálido de Costa Rica, la luz dorada del atardecer y la carga emocional del momento hicieron que la ceremonia fuera verdaderamente inolvidable.

Después de la ceremonia, la celebración continuó con una deliciosa cena en el Hotel Santarena. La noche fue un reflejo perfecto de Miguel y Sam: intencional, relajada y llena de alegría. La familia se reunió alrededor de la mesa, se compartieron historias y las risas se escucharon hasta bien entrada la noche. Para cerrar la velada de la mejor manera, los recién casados cortaron un pastel de boda tropical de piña colada, un postre divertido y perfecto que capturó el espíritu del día.

Aunque Arturo y yo nos sentimos honrados de ser parte de las bodas de todas nuestras parejas, esta tuvo un lugar muy especial en mi corazón. No solo estaba fotografiando la boda de mi hermana menor, sino que esta celebración también marcó el décimo año en que Arturo ha estado fotografiando bodas conmigo. Diez años de trabajo en equipo, de contar historias y de pasión compartida… ¡y qué manera tan hermosa de comenzar ese nuevo capítulo!

Miguel y su familia son personas verdaderamente maravillosas, amables y acogedoras. Ver el amor que Sam y Miguel se tienen el uno al otro hizo aún más evidente que mi hermana ha encontrado a su pareja perfecta. ¡No puedo imaginar a una mejor persona para haber conquistado su corazón!

THE LOVE STORY

In November of 2023, Sam was visiting Costa Rica for the first time. One evening, she went on a short walk to the very beach where Miguel happen to be hanging out. He noticed Sam, and watched her for a few minutes before he approached, as he assumed a pretty girl like her likely wasn't there alone. When no one came, he boldly walked up to her, introduced himself, and the rest is history! Miguel truly made a great first impression on Sam and was a total gentleman. They shared an instant chemistry! The two sat and talked on the beach for a few hours before he asked for her number, and they’ve spoken every day since despite living in separate countries. On their first official date the next day, Sam and Miguel chatted for several more hours, in their broken Spanish and English. The day they met, she told him that she would learn to speak Spanish fluently one day. Now, thanks to his patience and our mutual persistence and practice, both Miguel’s English and Sam’s Spanish have improved dramatically! They truly lead their relationship with compassion and adventure.

Sam and Miguel, it was the highest honor to witness your union and capture the beginning of your marriage in such a meaningful place. Your day was filled with beauty, love, and intention, and it will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Arturo and I cannot wait to see the adventures that lie ahead for you both, and we’re so grateful to have been part of this unforgettable chapter!

En noviembre de 2023, Sam visitó Costa Rica por primera vez. Una noche, salió a dar una corta caminata hasta la misma playa donde Miguel estaba pasando el rato. Él notó a Sam y la observó por unos minutos antes de acercarse, ya que asumió que una chica tan guapa como ella probablemente no estaría allí sola. Al ver que nadie llegaba, se armó de valor, se acercó, se presentó y… ¡el resto es historia! Miguel causó una excelente primera impresión en Sam y fue todo un caballero. Entre ellos hubo una química instantánea.

Los dos se sentaron a conversar en la playa durante varias horas antes de que él le pidiera su número, y desde entonces han hablado todos los días, a pesar de vivir en países distintos. En su primera cita oficial al día siguiente, Sam y Miguel conversaron por varias horas más, entre su español e inglés entrecortados. El día que se conocieron, ella le dijo que algún día aprendería a hablar español con fluidez. Hoy, gracias a la paciencia de Miguel y a nuestra constancia y práctica mutua, ¡tanto el inglés de Miguel como el español de Sam han mejorado de manera impresionante! Sin duda, llevan su relación con mucha compasión y espíritu de aventura.

Sam y Miguel, fue el mayor honor ser testigos de su unión y capturar el inicio de su matrimonio en un lugar tan significativo. Su día estuvo lleno de belleza, amor e intención, y siempre ocupará un lugar muy especial en nuestros corazones. Arturo y yo no podemos esperar para ver las aventuras que les esperan y estamos profundamente agradecidos de haber sido parte de este capítulo tan inolvidable.
