Planning Your Family Photography Session Outfits

FAMILY PHOTO OUTFIT STYLE TIPS & INSPIRATION

You’ve booked your date for your family portrait session… now it’s time to start planning what everyone is going to wear! Lucky for you, choosing outfits for your family session is easier than you think. If you’re one of our portrait clients, you’ll also receive our detailed session planning guide to make this process even simpler!

The goal is to COORDINATE outfits instead of MATCH them. As you’re going through your family’s clothing options, keep in mind that your outfits will look the most cohesive on camera when the color palettes coordinate, but don’t necessarily “match.”  You should each aim to wear a different dominant color, but stay within a similar color palette family.

When choosing colors for your outfits, I recommend selecting lighter tones and more muted shades.  Colors like soft pink and muted blues, mixed with sophisticated light neutrals like heather gray, creams, leather brown, and white all photograph wonderfully. They also fit beautifully into almost all natural outdoor environments!

Below I’ve put together a collection of different outfit selections with three various color palettes. Read on to learn more about how to style your family’s outfits for your next portrait session!

Cream, Brown, & Blue

Neutral colors like cream and brown will photograph well in pretty much any outdoor environment. Adding the pop of blue adds just enough color to these outfits without being too vibrant. This color palette would be perfect for any time of year!

Gray, Lavender, & Deep Navy

I love this color combo for a late fall or winter portrait session. The lavender pairs well with the grays and deep navy, and would look great in a coastal setting!

Pro Tip: Layers look great in masculine outfits. Adding a collared button-down under a crew neck sweater is a great way to incorporate layers!

Beige, Blush, & Sage Green

This color combo is a bit more colorful than the first two, and would look great during the spring and summer months! Whether you’re at a park, the beach, or somewhere else special to you, the soft sage green will fit into any natural environment while complementing the beige and blush.

If you’re ever unsure if certain outfits will work together, reach out to your photographer for their professional opinion. Feel free to take inspiration from the color palettes and outfits above, or even build off of them! Get creative, mix up some color palettes, and have fun. The sky is the limit!
