Choosing a Location for Your Engagement Session

ENGAGEMENT SESSION LOCATIONS

Imagine this: you’re well on your way to wedding planning and have booked your dream wedding photographer. They include an engagement session in the photography package you chose, which means now it’s time to start thinking about your engagement photos. You realize there are a variety of things to think about when planning your engagement session. What are you going to wear? When do you want to have your engagement photos taken? Where do you want to have your engagement photos taken?

Arturo and I know that wedding planning can feel all-consuming, let alone trying to figure out the logistics of an engagement session. That’s why we provide our couples with as many planning resources as possible! Each of our clients receive exclusive access to our Engagement Session Planning Guides, which include outfit inspiration, session location ideas, and more. While I could go on and on about how to plan the perfect engagement session, in this post I’m focusing on how to choose the best location for your engagement photos that suits the two of you!

FEEL & style

When considering a location for your engagement photos, think about the vibe and feel that you want your portraits to have. While your outfit choices play a big part in this as well, your surroundings are equally as important!

If you’ll be using your engagement photos for your save-the-dates, think about the style of your wedding. Do you want your portraits to have a modern or minimalistic feel? A coastal or metropolitan location could be just what you’re looking for. Maybe your wedding design is going to have a heavy emphasis on your love of nature, so a park or nature preserve might be right for you!

PERSONAL & SENTIMENTAL

Is there somewhere special that the two of you like to spend your time together? Think back to where you two met. College campuses quite often make a special spot for engagement photos. Some of our couples have a favorite park to go to with their dog!

Alternatively, think about if you have access to a unique location that most people aren’t able to get to. A historical estate or even an airplane hangar… the sky is (quite literally) the limit!

TIME OF YEAR

Depending on where you live, you’ll want to take the weather and seasons into consideration. Here in New England, winter engagement sessions aren’t as popular as spring, summer, and fall, yet they’re still some of our favorites!

There are certain locations that look great all year round, while others only photograph well in certain seasons. For example, many coastal locations are beautiful no matter what time of year it is. In the winter, you can’t tell that the natural surroundings of the beach aren’t lush and thriving because there isn’t usually too much greenery around the waterfront areas here anyway. On the other hand, town and state parks in New England often look much more lively and vibrant from May-October.

There are many details to consider when planning your engagement session, and I hope this post helped you brainstorm some location ideas for your engagement photos!
