I am so happy for Lisa and Matt! I first met them this past June when I was photographing Lisa's sister's wedding at Tashua Knolls (let me tell you, they can definitely bust a move together on the dance floor!). When I received a sweet email from Lisa a couple months later inquiring about wedding photography, I was so excited to be working with her lovely family again!
Matt proposed on a Saturday in May. With the help of Lisa's mom and younger sister, the plan went off without a hitch! As Lisa tells it, "After I got off work that day, I got a call from my sister saying she wasn't able to make it the next day for Mother's Day because her friend was in town. I thought that was a lame excuse and gave her a hard time about it, but we decided to do something that night for my mom instead. Lauren had recommended going to Gouveia Vineyard with my mom; it's scenic, the wine is fantastic and they let you bring your own food. We could have a little picnic, Lauren suggested, and I thought it was a great idea. I went home and told my mom our plans. I made some guacamole and brought along chips, cheese and crackers, and we drove together to the vineyard to meet Lauren and her fiance, Nyle, there. As we drove, the sky turned dark, and it looked like it might pour. Lauren and Nyle were already there when we arrived, where they had set up a table inside with flowers for Mother's Day. My mom was very appreciative. Lauren asked me if I could take a picture of her and Nyle outside because it looked like Ireland (somewhere they'd both always wanted to go) with the rolling hills and mist. I agreed, but when we stepped back outside it was actually starting to rain, and with the fog, you could barely even see the hills. I was pretty reluctant to go outside for their photo, but Lauren was insistent, and instead of just wanting it right by the building, we had to go all the way down the hill towards the vines. At this point, I was miserable with my raincoat and hood on. As I was getting ready to take their photo, Matt's arm wrapped around me! 'What are you doing here?!' I asked, since I knew he was supposed to be down in West Viriginia, were he lives and works. In fact, he had been texting me pictures of the Potomac River just an hour or two earlier. Matt said, 'Let's take a walk', as he led me further down the vineyard away from Lauren and Nyle. He said a lot of wonderful things, most of which I don't remember as I was caught up in the moment. I do remember him getting down on one knee and asking me to marry him, to which of course I said yes! The ring he picked out was absolutely gorgeous! We walked back inside to celebrate with my mom, Lauren and Nyle. I called my dad with the good news, but he was already aware since Matt had asked for their blessing a month before. It was a wonderful weekend and I couldn't have been happier!"
Lisa and Matt now live in West Virginia together, and work at the same hospital. They came up to visit family in Connecticut earlier this month, for which we had originally planned a Sunday evening engagement session at Edgerton Park in New Haven. Unfortunately a rainy day knocked that plan out, but luckily these two were more than ready for a sunrise session the following morning at Waveny Park in New Canaan (one of my favorite spots)! Though it was early and the crisp autumn air had us shivering at the start of the session, it was totally worth it. No one else was in the park at such an early hour, so we had it all to ourselves! To make things even sweeter, they brought along some hot cocoa in his-and-her mugs.
I can't wait to photograph their fall wedding next September! Congratulations Lisa and Matt!
